Chén̓chenstway Healing Garden and Indigenous Food Forest

Chén̓chenstway in the Squamish language means to lift each other up, to stand and work together.

This garden is a partnership between VUFFF, the Aboriginal Mother Centre Society and the Vancouver Park Board.

Memorial Garden

Chén̓chenstway Healing Garden also features a Running Free Wildflowers Memorial Garden for the children who never came home from residential schools.

The video features Elder Valerie Nicholson and Leona Brown at the opening ceremony of the garden explaining the significance of this project.

Hi, how are you? Did you enjoy the sunny hours last weekend? Our plant-friends sure did! Look how much they grew in the past weeks!

Today we focus on berries since there are so many different types of them that grow in this region. Because salmonberry is in bloom now we wanted to show her to you. As well as her relatives raspberry and thimbleberry. There is also blackberry and other berries at Chén̓chenstway who we will introduce you to in the next weeks.

Hi! This is our second post in this new series where we introduce you to plants that grow in Chén̓chenstway Healing Garden, an Indigenous food forest in Oxford Park and show you what changes you can witness in during the seasons and what to look out for.

This week you will find that the Nootka Rose is sprouting up a storm! You can also see many flowers making their way out of the ground and through the leaves. You can coexist with blooming daisies or cuddling slugs. Come around to 2050 Wall Street to Oxford Park on Sḵwxw̱ú7mesh, xʷməθkʷəy̓əm and səlilwətaɬ territory.

Breathe in and out mindfully when you stand in the healing garden.

We wish you a good week and before you go remember - sometimes you have to poke around in the dark a little like an annual flower to find the light again, but be certain that you carry the knowledge to guide you.

Yoohoo! There’s a new event happening every Tues

Yoohoo! There’s a new event happening every Tuesday at the Fieldhouse in Burrard View Park (545 North Slocan Street) starting on the 25th of March at 3pm!

The “Arts and Crafts and Plant Circle” is a space where you can learn, share and be creative in the presence of others. There are many ideas of what we can do together:

– processing seeds

– learning to make origami packages for the seeds to give them away

– linoleum carving

– drawing

– painting

– pressing plants

– decorating the Fieldhouse

– organizing shelves

– processing foods

– making patches

… you name it! There are sooo many options.

If you want to share skills or bring your own ideas you are more than welcome to do that. Just come along alone or with your friends.

Everyone is welcome no matter the skill level, age (children welcome) or any other social category 🙂

This is an inclusive space to learn and explore your own creativity.

Looking forward to seeing you at the fieldhouse that is located on the unceded territory of Sḵwxw̱ú7mesh, xʷməθkʷəy̓əm and səlilwətaɬ people that we have the pleasure to call our home too.
